Sbarro Health Research Organization Mourns the Passing of Amato Berardi

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Sbarro Health Research Organization (SHRO) mourns the passing of Amato Berardi, a longtime supporter of initiatives strengthening ties between Italy and the United States, who died suddenly in Rome on December 12, 2025, at the age of 67.

As a former member of Italian parliament living in Philadelphia, Berardi was a strong advocate for Italians living abroad to maintain an enduring connection to Italy. As a financial consultant and philanthropist, his passion and knowledge contributed enormously to the mission of SHRO as well as the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF), where SHRO Founder Antonio Giordano is a member of the board.

Amato Berardi was a respected leader whose life reflected a deep commitment to service, civic engagement, and the Italian and Italian American community. His work brought together public service, entrepreneurship, and cultural advocacy in ways that left a lasting impact on those who knew him.

Antonio Giordano, M.D., Ph.D., Director and Founder of SHRO, issued the following statement:

“Amato Berardi’s passing is a profound loss. He was a man of vision, integrity, and purpose who believed deeply in strengthening connections between Italy and the United States. I had the privilege of participating alongside him in organizations devoted to these shared values, and I extend my sincere condolences to his family and all who are mourning his loss.”

Born in Longano, in Italy’s Molise region, Amato Berardi immigrated to the United States as a young boy and built a distinguished career in financial services, becoming a successful entrepreneur and respected figure in the Philadelphia business community. His commitment to public service led him to serve as a deputy in the Italian Parliament representing Italians abroad from 2008 to 2013. He was later honored as a Cavaliere of the Republic of Italy and named Ambassador of Molise in the World.

Throughout his life, Amato Berardi remained deeply connected to his roots while working to build meaningful bridges between Italy and America. His dedication to heritage, leadership, and public service earned him the respect of colleagues across business, government, and nonprofit organizations.

The Sbarro Health Research Organization joins the Italian and Italian American community in honoring Amato Berardi’s legacy and extends its deepest condolences to his wife, Maddalena; his children, Carmine and Carmelina; his family in Molise; and all who were touched by his life and work.
